No, you can use the magic circle/ring in any of the patterns that say to start with the chain two method, this is just my preferred way as I found it easier to do when I first started to learn how to crochet.

Yes, by all means you can use a different size hook but you will need to make sure that the yarn you are using is going to be the right size as well.

In some cases yes it is ok to use a different type of yarn with a different fiber content. I use cotton yarn on all my toys because I feel that it with stands the impact of play better than an acrylic yarn.
