How To Crochet A Gingerbread Man

Learn how to make these cute gingerbread men to hang on your Christmas tree this year! For the eyes you can use buttons or safety eyes it’s up to you. While this pattern is available for free here on MummaJ Crochet, a PDF version is also available (low cost and print friendly!)

You will need:


Cotton Yarn


Yarn Needle


Scissors

Stuffing

3 mm Crochet Hook

Safety Eyes


*Cotton Yarn: 100% cotton, 50 g (1.76 oz) / 115m (125 yd) Etsy

Stitches / abbreviations:


Sc = Single Crochet (Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through, now you have 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through both loops.)


Hdc = Half Double Crochet (Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through all three loops.)


Dc = Double Crochet (Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.)


Ss = Slip stitch (Insert hook, yarn over, pull through both stitch and loop on hook.)


Inc = Increase (2 stitches in same stitch)


Dec = Decrease (Insert hook into front loop of first stitch, Insert hook into front loop of second stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops, now you have 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through both loops.)


Blo = Back loop only


Flo = Front loop only


St = Stitch/stitches


Ch = Chain (Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook)

  • * repeat the pattern in-between the asterix X amount of times
  • = number of stitches at the end of the round
  • Work in continuous spiral; do not join your work at the end of the rounds unless stated.
  • This pattern uses US terminology.

Written Pattern:

Make two gingerbread men patterns and we’ll stitch them
together at the end.


Main color
Legs x 2

Make a slipknot, ch 5, skip the last ch that you made, sc 4 = 4
Ch 1, turn your work, 1 inc, sc 2, 1 inc = 6

*Ch 1, turn your work, 1 sc in each st* x 4 rows = 6
Cut the yarn for the first leg but leave it attached on the second leg.

Body
Ch 1, turn your work, sc 6, ch 1, pick up the first leg that you made and work 6 sc across = 12 + 1 ch

Ch 1, turn your work, sc 6, make 1 sc in the ch 1, sc 6 = 13

*Ch 1, turn your work, sc 13 = 13* x 8 rows

Arms
Ch 7, skip the last ch that you made, sc 6, sc 13 along the body, ch 7, skip the last ch that you made sc 6 = 25

Ss to the st on the body, make 1 sc in the same st that you ss into, sc 18.

*Ch 1, turn your work, sc 25 = 25* x 3 rows

Head
Ch 1, turn your work, sc 6, make a ss in the next 4 st, sc 6.

Ch 1, turn your work, 1 inc, sc 4, 1 inc = 8

Ch 1, turn your work, 1 inc, sc 6, 1 inc = 10

Ch 1, turn your work, 1 inc, sc 8, 1 inc = 12

*Ch 1, turn your work, sc 12 = 12* x 4 rows

Ch 1, turn your work, 1 dec, sc 8, 1 dec = 10

Ch 1, turn your work, 1 dec, sc 6, 1 dec = 8

Ch 1, turn your work, 1 dec, sc 4, 1 dec = 6

Ch 1, turn your work, 1 dec, sc 2, 1 dec = 4

Cut the yarn and make your second gingerbread man.

Buttons

Make a slipknot, ch 2, make 6 sc in the first ch that you made, ss to the top of the first sc = 6

Once you have made the 2 gingerbread men sides attach the eyes and any other details you would like.

Take the white yarn, place the two gingerbread men sides together and stitch along all the sides with sc, make a ss in the

corners of the neck instead of a sc and make 3 sc on the corners of the arms.

Stuff the arms and legs as you go so it’s not so hard to stuff at the end.
