How To Crochet A Snowman Toy

These snowmen are so much fun to make! You can make your snowman’s
accessories on any color combination you like. While this pattern is available for free here on MummaJ Crochet, a PDF version is also available (low cost and print friendly!)

Some stuffing

Acrylic yarn in white

Cotton yarn in whichever colour you want for your accessories

Black cotton yarn for the mouth and arms

2 buttons

8 mm safety eyes

Scissors

Yarn needle

5.5 mm crochet hook for the snowman

3 mm crochet hook for the accessories


*Cotton Yarn: 100% cotton, 50 g (1.76 oz) / 115m (125 yd)

Stitches / abbreviations:


Sc = Single Crochet (Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through, now you have 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through both loops.)


Hdc = Half Double Crochet (Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through all three loops.)


Dc = Double Crochet (Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.)


Ss = Slip stitch (Insert hook, yarn over, pull through both stitch and loop on hook.)


Inc = Increase (2 stitches in same stitch)


Dec = Decrease (Insert hook into front loop of first stitch, Insert hook into front loop of second stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops, now you have 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through both loops.)


Blo = Back loop only


Flo = Front loop only


St = Stitch/stitches


Ch = Chain (Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook)

  • * repeat the pattern in-between the asterix X amount of times
  • = number of stitches at the end of the round
  • Work in continuous spiral; do not join your work at the end of the rounds unless stated.
  • This pattern uses US terminology.

Written Pattern:

Snowman: Acrylic Yarn 5.5 mm hook

Make a slipknot, ch 2, make 6 sc in the first ch that you made. = 6


*1 inc* x 6 = 12


*1 sc, 1 inc* x 6 = 18


*2 sc, 1 inc* x 6 = 24


*3 sc, 1 inc* x 6 = 30


1 sc in each st for 7 rows = 30

*3 sc, 1 Dec* x 6 = 24


Attach eyes between row 8 and 9, with 4 stitches between them


*2 sc, 1 Dec* x 6 = 18


*1 sc, 1 Dec* x 6 = 12


1 sc in each st for 1 row = 12

*1 sc, 1 Inc* x 6 = 18


*2 sc, 1 Inc* x 6 = 24


1 sc in each st for 1 row = 24


*3 sc, 1 Inc* x 6 = 30


1 sc in each st for 1 row = 30

*9 sc, 1 Inc* x 3 = 33


*1 Inc, 10 sc* x 3 = 36


*5 sc, 1 Inc* x 6 = 42

Cut your yarn and using your yarn needle thread the tail through the front loops of the last 6
stitches, pull the tail tight to close the hole and hide the tail inside the snowman.

Scarf: 3 mm, cotton yarn

Ch 81


Skip 1, 1 sc in each ch = 80


Ch 1, turn your work, sc 20, ch 5, skip 5 st, sc 55 = 80


Ch 1, 1 sc in each st and chain = 80


Ch 1, cut the yarn and hide the yarn ends in the Scarf.

Hat: 3mm, cotton yarn

Ch 5, ss to the first ch to make a loop, ch 2 (doesn’t count as a st), make 12 dc into the centre of
the loop, ss to the top of the first dc, pull the tail tight = 12

Ch 2, 1 dc into the same st as the ch 2, 2 DC in each stitch around ss to the top of the ch 2 = 24


Ch 2, 1 Inc, *1 sc, 1 Inc* x 11, ss to the top of the ch 2 = 36


Ch 2, 1 dc in each stitch for 6 rows, ss to the top of the ch 2 = 36


Cut the yarn and hide the yarn tail inside the beanie.

Pompom:

Take your yarn and wrap it around two fingers or the end of a crochet hook until there is a
big lump of yarn, cut the end and then cut a piece of yarn, carefully pull the yarn bundle off
and put the cut piece of yarn inside, tie the piece of yarn tightly around one side of the
bundle and then cut all the yarn strands on the other side.


Holding the two ends of the yarn piece cut and shape your pompom to the desired size, use
the two ends of the yarn piece to stitch it onto the top of the beanie.

Carrot Nose: 3 mm hook, cotton yarn

Ch 2, make 4 sc in the first ch that you made = 4


1 sc in each st = 4


*1 sc, 1 inc* x 2 = 6

Cut the yarn long enough to stitch it onto the face.

Stitch on the nose, arms, buttons and mouth like the picture below, knot the ends together
and hide the tails inside the snowman.
