How To Crochet A Bee Lovey

Learn how to crochet this super cute crochet bee lovey! Babies will lovey the stripes of the bee and blanket. While this pattern is available for free here on MummaJ Crochet, a PDF version is also available (low cost and print friendly!)

You will need:

Cotton Yarn


Yarn Needle


Scissors

Stuffing

3 mm and 3.5 mm Crochet Hook


*Cotton Yarn: 100% cotton, 50 g (1.76 oz) / 115m (125 yd) Etsy

Stitches / abbreviations:


Sc = Single Crochet (Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through, now you have 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through both loops.)


Hdc = Half Double Crochet (Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through all three loops.)


Dc = Double Crochet (Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.)


Ss = Slip stitch (Insert hook, yarn over, pull through both stitch and loop on hook.)


Inc = Increase (2sc in same stitch)


Dec = Decrease (Insert hook into front loop of first stitch, Insert hook into front loop of second stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops, now you have 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through both loops.)


Blo = Back loop only


Flo = Front loop only


St = Stitch/stitches


Ch = Chain (Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook)

  • * repeat the pattern in-between the asterix X amount of times
  • = number of stitches at the end of the round
  • Work in continuous spiral; do not join your work at the end of the rounds unless stated.
  • This pattern uses US terminology.

Written Pattern:

Bee 3 mm Hook

Yellow:
Make a slipknot, ch 2, make 6 sc in the first ch that you made = 6
*1 inc* x 6 = 12
*1 sc, 1 inc* x 6 =18
*2 sc, 1 inc* x 6 =24
*3 sc, 1 inc* x 6 = 30
3 rows of sc = 30
Add safety eyes to the front.


Black:


Ss to the next st and change yarn to black, ch1 (does not count as a st), sc into the same st that you ss into, make 1 sc in each st around = 30


*Ss to the next st, ch1 (does not count as a st), sc into the same st that you ss into, make 1 sc in each st around* x2 = 30


Yellow:
Ss to the next st and change yarn to yellow, ch1 (does not count as a st), sc into the same st that you ss into, make 1 sc in each st around = 30


*Ss to the next st, ch1 (does not count as a st), sc into the same st that you ss into, make 1 sc in each st around* x2 = 30


Black:
Ss to the next st and change yarn to black, ch1 (does not count as a st), sc into the same st that you ss into, make 1 sc in each st around = 30


*Ss to the next st, ch1 (does not count as a st), sc into the same st that you ss into, make 1 sc in each st around* x2 = 30

Yellow:
Ss to the next st and change yarn to yellow, ch1 (does not count as a st), sc into the same st that you ss into, make 1 sc in each st around = 30

2 rows of sc (do not make a ss and ch1 any more just skip over them and work in the round) = 30


*3 sc, 1 dec* x 6 = 24
*2 sc, 1 dec* x 6 = 18
Stuff
*1 sc, 1 dec* x 6 = 12
*1 dec* x 6 = 6


Cut the yarn long enough, thread the yarn through the front loops of each of the last 6 st, pull the tail tight and hide the yarn inside the bee.


Wings (Make 2)

White:
Make a slipknot, ch 2, make 6sc in the first ch that you made = 6
*1 inc* x 6 = 12
*1 sc, 1 inc* x 6 =18
1 row of sc = 18
Ss to the next stitch, cut the yarn long enough to stitch it onto
the body.
Stitch the wings on top of the bee in the very center.


Hexagon Blanket 3.5 mm Hook

Black
1.
Leave a long starting yarn tail so you can it to stitch the bee on at
the end, Ch4, ss to first ch to make a loop.


2.
Ch 3 (counts as a dc), 1 dc into the center of the loop, ch 2 *2 dc into the center of the loop, ch2* x5 you should now have 6 sets of posts, ss to the top of the ch 3.


3.
Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 1 dc into the next st, in the ch 2 space
make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc. *2 dc, in space 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc* x 5
ss to the top of ch3.

Yellow
4.

Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 2 dc, in the ch 2 space make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc.
*4 dc, in space 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc* x 5, 1 dc, ss to the top of ch3.


Black
5.

Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 3 dc, in the ch 2 space make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc.
*6 dc, in space 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc* x 5, 2 dc, ss to the top of ch3.


Yellow

Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 4 dc, in the ch 2 space make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc.

Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 7 dc, in the ch 2 space make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc.
*14 dc, in space 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc* x 5, 6 dc, ss to the top of ch3.


Yellow
10.

Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 8 dc, in the ch 2 space make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc.
*16 dc, in space 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc* x 5, 7 dc, ss to the top of ch3.

Black
11.

Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 9 dc, in the ch 2 space make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc.
*18 dc, in space 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc* x 5, 8 dc, ss to the top of ch3.


Yellow
12.

Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 10 dc, in the ch 2 space make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc.
*20 dc, in space 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc* x 5, 9 dc, ss to the top of ch3.


Black
13.

Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 11 dc, in the ch 2 space make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc.
*22 dc, in space 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc* x 5, 10 dc, ss to the top of ch3.

Cut the yarn long enough and weave the yarn tails into the blanket except for the center yarn tail.

Take an extra piece of black yarn and make a smiling mouth on
your bee.

Place your bee in the center of the blanket and thread the yarn
tail through the bottom of the bee then though the blanket,
repeat this until you have stitched the bee on all the way around
and if it doesn’t feel secure stitch around the bee again.
