Which Crochet Lovey Should I Make First?
With 12 patterns to choose from, deciding where to start might be the hardest part!
If you want a classic animal design, try the bear or bunny lovey.
For something magical, make the unicorn lovey.
If you love woodland animals, the fox lovey is a great choice.
For something a little different, try the frog, panda, mouse, bee or sloth.
And if you mainly want to crochet a beautiful small security blanket, choose between the 6 point star, 8 point star and hexagon lovey blankets.
You can also mix and match your favourite animal and blanket designs to create your own unique lovey.
What Is a Crochet Lovey?
A crochet lovey is generally a small security blanket, often combined with a crocheted animal or character.
Because lovey blankets are smaller than full baby blankets, they can also be enjoyable projects when you don’t want to crochet a large blanket.
There are lots of ways to customise them too.
Change the animal, blanket shape, yarn colours and other details and you can create many different designs from the same basic idea.
What Yarn Should I Use for a Crochet Lovey?
Check the individual pattern for the yarn and hook size used for that particular design.
Using a similar yarn weight will help you achieve a finished size similar to the original pattern.
Colour is where you can really have fun.
You could use traditional animal colours, match the lovey to a nursery colour scheme or simply choose yarn you already have in your stash.
Are Crochet Lovey Patterns Good for Baby Gifts?
A handmade lovey can make a thoughtful crochet project for a new baby, baby shower or expecting parent.
If you’re making a crochet item for a baby, however, safety should always come first.
Make sure all parts are securely attached, avoid loose or detachable decorations and consider embroidered facial features instead of pieces that could potentially come loose.
The finished item should also be checked regularly for damage.
Parents and caregivers should follow current safe-sleep guidance and decide when and how handmade items are appropriate for their child.

Make Your Own Crochet Lovey Collection
Once you’ve made one lovey, you don’t have to stop there!
Try making several different animals or use the same animal with different blanket shapes.
For example, you could make a bear with a star blanket and another with a hexagon blanket.
Changing yarn colours gives you even more combinations.
You could eventually have a whole collection containing bears, bunnies, unicorns, frogs, foxes, pandas, mice, bees and sloths.
